As esports increasingly feature in major international sports events, the ties between esports and traditional sports have been deepening, which has drawn significant scholarly attention. This study aims to explore the overall trends in Chinese academic research on esports, deeply analyze its developmental mechanisms, and examine the dynamics between the sportsification of electronic games and the virtualization/esportsification of traditional sports. Emerging from the convergence of traditional sports and electronic games, esports continuously navigates a balance between its sporting and gaming elements, as well as between physical and digital spaces. Based on this analysis, this study further establishes an“element-space” taxonomical framework and defines four main categories of esports, namely: sports-virtualized esports, sports-gamified esports, electronic game-based esports, and motion sensing game-based esports. By explaining the inherent relationships and transformation logic within the genealogical structure of esports, the study additionally suggests the trend of“ultimate integration” of esports in the digital and intelligent era and its potential as a future sports development direction.
